Tarmac vs Resin Driveway: Which One is Best for Your Property?
Building a driveway on your property isn’t just about creating a space for cars. It’s also about improving functionality and boosting the curb appeal of your home.
When it comes to choosing the right material, homeowners are often faced with many options. Among the most popular are tarmac and resin driveways. Both materials are widely used across the UK, each offering its own strengths and drawbacks.
In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at tarmac vs resin driveway, comparing their cost, durability, aesthetics, and environmental impact to help you decide which option best suits your property.
Read our guide below!
What is a Tarmac Driveway?
A tarmac driveway is one of the most widely used options for domestic driveways in the UK. Tarmac is essentially broken stones pressed closely together. It was traditionally mixed with cement, aggregate and tar.
However, modern applications don’t use tar anymore. The materials are then compacted by steamrollers and coated with finer broken stones to give it a smooth, silky finish.
What is Resin Bound Driveway?
Resin bound is becoming a popular choice for driveways nowadays. This type of surface is created by mixing resin with small aggregates, such as gravel or crushed stone, to form a smooth, durable, and visually appealing layer.
The mixture is carefully blended before being laid onto a prepared base to ensure that every stone is evenly coated with resin. Once spread, the surface is levelled and compacted to create a seamless, porous finish.
Tarmac vs Resin Driveway: Key Comparisons
After defining the two options, let’s now move on to the key comparisons of tarmac and resin driveways.
Both materials come with their own strengths, and the right choice for your property will largely depend on your priorities—whether it’s durability, cost, aesthetics, or environmental impact.
Cost
The average cost to tarmac a 50 sqm driveway in the UK is approximately £4,500. This price generally includes essential elements such as excavation, disposal of materials, and laying a proper sub-base.
Maintenance costs are also relatively low, as tarmac only needs occasional resealing or minor patching to fix cracks.
Resin bound driveways, on the other hand, typically cost around £4,000 to £5,000 for a 50 sqm area. While the initial price is slightly higher compared to tarmac, resin offers excellent long-term value due to its resistance to weeds and cracking.
Maintenance costs are minimal as well, usually limited to occasional power washing to maintain its appearance.
Durability and Lifespan
With proper maintenance, both tarmac and resin driveways are highly durable and can last for many years. Each surface has a smooth finish, meaning regular sweeping to clear leaves, dirt, or debris is usually enough to keep the area tidy.
Resin-bound driveways are particularly known for their resistance to cracking and weed growth, which makes them less prone to long-term damage. When installed correctly, resin driveways can last up to 15-20 years with minimal upkeep.
Tarmac, while also strong and widely trusted, is slightly more vulnerable to cracking over time, especially with extreme weather changes. Cracking can cause weeds to grow through, so prompt patching and repairs are necessary to maintain its integrity. Despite this, tarmac is still very reliable and can last around 15–20 years.
Aesthetics
Resin offers a wide range of colour options to suit any property design. Homeowners can choose from natural finishes like sand, gravel, or stone; to modern metallic shades such as gold, silver, or copper; and even lighter colours like pink, yellow, and white.
Resin also allows for the creation of patterns, borders, and unique designs, giving you the freedom to personalise your driveway to match your style.
Tarmac, on the other hand, is most seen in classic black, which offers a sleek appearance. However, coloured options are also available, including neutral tones, red, green, and blue. You can add personalised edging with bricks, grass, or gravel to add personality to your space.
Environmental Impact
Resin-bound driveway is considered as one of the lowest-impact materials for driveways. Its long lifespan and minimal maintenance reduce the need for frequent replacements or resource-heavy repairs.
Meanwhile, tarmac shines when it comes to recyclability. Unlike concrete, which often goes to waste, tarmac can be reused without losing quality. Old tarmac can be broken down and repurposed, making it an eco-friendly option for projects focused on reducing waste.
Which One is Best for Your Property?
Once you understand the difference between a tarmac vs resin driveway, it’s time to decide which one best suits your property. The key is to identify the factors that matter most to you: do you value budget, design flexibility, durability, or sustainability?
When is tarmac ideal?
Tarmac is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a cost-effective, durable, and quick-to-install solution. It’s perfect for larger driveways or households with heavy vehicle use. Its recyclability also makes it a smart pick if reducing waste is one of your priorities.
When is resin ideal?
Resin-bound driveways are best if you want design versatility and a premium finish. With its many colour options and the ability to create custom patterns, resin suits homeowners who want their driveway to complement their home design.
It’s also ideal for properties in areas prone to heavy rain, thanks to its permeable surface and natural drainage.
