We were commissioned to carry out essential bridge maintenance and deck replacement work on two timber-decked structures as part of a broader infrastructure programme overseen by Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS).
The works were required to address structural deficiencies, improve safety, and ensure long-term usability for multiple access users, and involved the removal and replacement of deteriorated timber components alongside necessary access works, traffic management, and watercourse protection.
Primary objectives
The core aim of this project was to deliver a safe, durable and low-maintenance crossing solution that met both operational and public access needs. This included
- The removal of existing bolted steel plate coverings
- Safe disposal of all degraded timber deck and beams
- Supply and installation of new prefabricated concrete deck components
- Installation of all required scaffolding and temporary works
- Straightening and securing of Bridge 2099’s handrail
- Transport and installation of a steel plate to an additional timber bridge 5km north
- Full site protection, welfare provision and access/egress control in accordance with FLS standards.
- Environmental protection, including safeguarding the watercourse during construction.
Challenges faced
Access logistics and environmental sensitivity were key challenges in this project. Bridges 2099 and 2100 span watercourses with depths of 6m and 7m respectively from handrail to bed, requiring carefully engineered scaffolding solutions.
All materials had to be delivered in advance of bridge removal works, as crossing damaged structures post-demolition was not feasible. Additional complexities included the safe handling and removal of heavy steel plates, the clearance of four piles, complying with waste handling regulations, and ensuring public safety.
How M.A.M Contracting completed the works
To ensure we were able to deliver the high standards we expect with every project, we employed our years of experience to overcome these challenges.
Site setup and access control
A secure compound was established 3.5km from Bridge 2099 and Heras fencing and advance signage installed to secure the site and prepare for safe materials delivery.
Deck removal and transport
All steel plates currently bolted to the timber decks were carefully removed and transported to Sidings Quarry. The plates were off-loaded and stacked neatly in a marked zone. Existing timber deck beams and fixings were then dismantled and responsibly disposed of at a licenced recycling facility.
Installation of prefabricated concrete deck components
New concrete deck elements were installed using appropriate plant and scaffolding and full compliance with the works specification was maintained.
Handrail rectification – Bridge 2099
Following vehicle strike damage, Bridge 2099’s parapet was realigned, and all associated fixings were tightened.
Steel plate transport and fitting (unnamed bridge)
A 1.5m x 3m steel plate was delivered and installed at a timber bridge located 5km north of Bridge 2099, covering a rotted section of the deck. Existing bolts were reused as specified.
Environmental protection and final remediation
Throughout the project, watercourse protection measures were in place to prevent contamination or disturbance. Following completion of all works, the area was fully remediated with site fencing removed, compounds cleared, and access tracks restored.
The benefits
This project delivered safer, longer-lasting infrastructure across multiple key access routes, ensuring safe usage for all stakeholders while supporting future forestry operations. Our attention to detail, environmental care, and logistical planning reflect M.A.M Contracting’s commitment to delivering resilient infrastructure in remote and sensitive environments.
