MAM Contracting is pleased to announce the successful completion of essential culvert replacement works on the B934 at Fanny Burn, within the catchment area of the Loch Leven Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The project involved removing and replacing an existing culvert to improve long-term drainage performance and safeguard the surrounding environmentally sensitive habitat. The works were delivered within a highly protected landscape, requiring careful planning and strict environmental controls to ensure minimal impact on the watercourse and adjacent vegetation. Given the ecological sensitivity of the area, all operations were carried out in accordance with relevant SEPA guidance and the ecological mitigation measures set out within the project requirements.
As part of the early works, we established safe access to the site from the B934, including a fully signposted road closure and diversion route. We also established a temporary compound, along with a controlled water-diversion system, to safely manage flows throughout the construction period.
To help safeguard the surrounding land, habitats and vegetation from disturbance during the works, we also ensured a number of protective measures. The existing culvert was carefully dismantled and removed in a controlled sequence to minimise disruption to the watercourse and ensure that environmental risks were effectively managed, while all associated debris was removed from the site in line with waste management procedures.
Following the removal of the existing structure, a new culvert was installed in accordance with the design drawings and technical specifications from the client. The installation was completed with the highest level of precision and care to ensure the long-term resilience and hydraulic efficiency of the drainage system, while maintaining compliance with environmental and engineering standards.
Throughout the works, our MAM Contracting team implemented comprehensive environmental protection measures, including sediment control systems to prevent contamination of the watercourse. Regular monitoring and coordination ensured that all activities remained compliant with ecological requirements and stakeholder expectations. Afterwards, the surrounding embankments, access routes and disturbed areas were then fully reinstated, and all vegetation and landscape features were restored in line with pre-construction conditions, ensuring the site was returned to an appropriate environmental state.
The successful delivery of the Fanny Burn culvert replacement demonstrates our expertise in working within environmentally sensitive locations. By combining MAM Contracting’s technical engineering capabilities with a strong commitment to ecological protection and compliance, we have been able to provide a robust and sustainable drainage solution for the B934 while safeguarding the integrity of the Loch Leven catchment area.
