MAM Contracting is pleased to announce the successful completion and handover of the Bolfracks Wall reconstruction project on the A827 between Aberfeldy and Kenmore. The works addressed the failure of a 20-metre section of the existing gabion basket retaining wall, which had partially collapsed after the River Tay scoured away its foundations.
The A827 is a vital route serving local communities, businesses and visitors, making the timely delivery of the works essential. MAM Contracting completed the project within the programmed road closure period, ensuring disruption to road users was kept to an absolute minimum while maintaining the highest standards of safety and environmental protection.
The project involved the full removal and replacement of the failed gabion wall section, the installation of rockbag scour protection along the entire length of the wall, and the introduction of robust temporary works to support the construction process.
Environmental considerations were central to every stage of the Works. Given the high ecological importance of the River Tay, MAM Contracting operated in full compliance with ecological licence requirements, employing stringent environmental protection measures and closely managing activities within the river corridor.
Once the failed gabion baskets were removed, the team constructed a new reinforced gabion retaining wall designed to withstand long-term hydraulic and geological pressures. With the structural works completed, the road surface along the affected section was fully reconstructed, and a new vehicle restraint system was installed to enhance road-user safety.
Throughout the project, MAM Contracting worked collaboratively with stakeholders to coordinate road management, including the erection of diversion routes and the safe implementation of a full road closure. Careful planning and programming ensured construction was delivered efficiently and without delay.
The successful completion of the Bolfracks Wall project demonstrates our capability in delivering complex civil engineering works in challenging, environmentally sensitive locations. By combining technical expertise with a strong focus on environmental stewardship, the team has secured the long-term stability of this important retaining structure and ensured the continued safe operation of the A827.
With the works now complete and the road reopened, the upgraded infrastructure provides improved resilience against future river scour events and supports the ongoing reliability of a key transport link in Highland Perthshire.
