MAM Contracting Appointed to Reopen Cullipool Slate Quarry

MAM Contracting Ltd is proud to announce its appointment as the delivery partner for the reopening of Cullipool Slate Quarry on the Isle of Luing—bringing West Highland slate production back to Scotland for the first time in over 60 years.

Appointed by Isle of Luing Community Trust, MAM began preparatory works on April 8, 2026. Construction will commence in Autumn 2026, with the quarry set to enter production in Spring 2027.

Delivering a Sustainable Slate Quarry

MAM Contracting will lead a phased programme designed to minimise community impact while delivering a long-term, sustainable Scottish slate supply.

Works will include:

  • Development of a new slate processing facility
  • Coastal protection works for Cullipool village
  • Full preparation of the quarry for production

The project will reintroduce a reliable source of authentic Scottish slate, supporting heritage and construction projects across the UK.

Supporting Local Communities and Heritage

Backed by £2.1 million from the Scottish Government via Argyll and Bute Council, with support from Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Historic Environment Scotland, the project will:

  • Create up to seven skilled local jobs
  • Supply heritage building materials in Scotland
  • Support the conservation of historic buildings

MAM Contracting Statement

A spokesperson for MAM Contracting said:

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Isle of Luing Community Trust on this landmark project. Cullipool Slate Quarry represents a unique opportunity to combine sustainable development with the revival of a traditional Scottish industry, and we look forward to delivering the project for the benefit of the local community and Scotland’s built heritage.”

Looking Ahead

Aligned with the Luing Local Place Plan (2024), the project responds to growing demand for locally sourced, sustainable materials. With production targeted for 2027, MAM Contracting is proud to play a key role in delivering this significant quarry development.
