MAM Contracting Begins Vital Works On Bolfracks Wall Along The A827

We are excited to announce that our MAM Contracting team has begun work on a major infrastructure project on the A827 between Aberfeldy and Kenmore. The project focuses on the repair and reinforcement of the Bolfracks retaining wall, a critical structure that supports the road alongside the River Tay.

The existing gabion basket wall, which has long provided stability to this stretch of road, has suffered significant damage after the river scoured away the foundations of a 20-metre section. This failure has caused part of the wall to collapse, creating both safety and environmental challenges that require urgent attention.

Given the A827’s importance as a key transport link for local communities, businesses, and visitors, MAM Contracting has been tasked with completing the works within a tightly controlled schedule. Road closures will be essential, but the company is working closely with local authorities to minimise disruption by carefully planning diversions and streamlining construction phases.

The project scope includes the complete removal and replacement of the collapsed section of wall, alongside preventative measures to safeguard the structure in the future. This involves installing rockbag scour protection along the full length of the retaining wall within the River Tay, and these measures will help prevent further erosion of the foundations while respecting the site’s environmental significance.

To ensure the stability of the works, MAM Contracting will also design, certify and install temporary works before reconstructing the wall. Once the new gabion structure is in place, our team will restore the road surface and install a modern vehicle restraint system to enhance road safety for years to come.

Environmental considerations are central to the project, and the River Tay and its surrounding habitats are of high ecological importance, which is why our team is ensuring all activities are carried out under strict environmental licence requirements. Specialist teams will work carefully to mitigate impacts on the local environment, with construction methods tailored to preserve the sensitive river ecosystem.

The Bolfracks wall project highlights MAM Contracting’s expertise in delivering complex civil engineering works in challenging environments. With careful planning, technical precision and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, the company is working to secure the long-term resilience of this vital transport route.

Works are now underway, with completion expected within the agreed road closure period. Once finished, the improvements will provide greater stability to the A827 and ensure it remains a safe, reliable route for all who live, work and travel in Highland Perthshire.
