MAM Contracting Commences Retaining Wall Reconstruction At The Historic Bridge Of Dillavaird

MAM Contracting has begun essential reconstruction works on the C421 near the historic Bridge of Dillavaird, following the failure of a masonry retaining wall caused by a landslide in 2023. The bridge, which spans the River Isla approximately 23 miles north-east of Perth, dates back to around 1850 and is recognised as a listed structure of historical importance.

Situated on the boundary between Perth and Kinross Council and Angus Council, the Bridge of Dillavaird plays a vital role in the local transport network and heritage landscape. While the bridge itself remains structurally sound, the adjacent retaining wall suffered significant damage during the landslide, necessitating urgent intervention to stabilise the surrounding area and safeguard the road.

The works, being delivered by our experienced MAM Contracting team, will involve the construction of a new retaining structure immediately beside the bridge to replace the failed wall. The project has been carefully designed to respect the bridge’s historical character while providing a robust, modern engineering solution to protect the integrity of the route and the surrounding environment.

Key elements of the project include the installation of new piled foundations, a reinforced concrete capping beam and ground anchors to ensure long-term stability. The replacement wall will be constructed using reinforced soil techniques with concrete backfill and geogrid reinforcement, creating a durable and sustainable structure that blends with the natural landscape.

Prior to commencing construction, we will undertake comprehensive ecological surveys to identify any breeding birds, otters, or beavers in the area. Where required, we will then implement environmental protection measures and ensure they’re maintained throughout the works. Pollution prevention and surface water management controls are also being established to protect the River Isla and surrounding habitats.

Traffic management will be in place at the site access points on the C421, although no additional road closure permits are required as the route is already closed to traffic. Upon completion of the new retaining wall, MAM Contracting will reinstate the C421 road and drainage gullies, install a vehicle restraint system and fully restore and revegetate the surrounding area.

The Bridge of Dillavaird project demonstrates our expertise in delivering technically challenging civil engineering works in sensitive environments and near historically significant structures. Through careful planning, environmental stewardship and engineering precision, we aim to restore stability to this important section of the C421 while preserving the character of one of the region’s most notable bridges.

Works are now underway, with completion planned within the agreed programme period. Once finished, the reconstructed retaining wall will provide improved safety, resilience and long-term protection for both the road and the historic bridge setting.
