MAM Contracting Delivers Accelerated Bridge Re-Decking Project in Newcastleton

MAM Contracting is pleased to announce the successful completion of a bridge re-decking project in Newcastleton for an ongoing client. The re-decking was delivered significantly ahead of schedule, despite the team facing challenging winter conditions.

Originally scheduled to take three weeks, the works were completed in just one week by a small and dedicated team of two. The project was carried out during some of the worst weather of the year as Storm Amy swept across the region, bringing high winds and heavy rainfall. Despite this, the team maintained exceptional standards of workmanship and safety throughout.

The project carried a personal touch for MAM Contracting, with one of the company’s managers, Graham, stepping back onto the tools to work alongside his father, Graham Snr — a long-standing and highly respected grader operator. Their combined experience and commitment contributed to the swift and high-quality delivery of the works, demonstrating that “you never lose it.”

The scope of works included the supply and installation of all new prefabricated concrete and timber components to replace the deteriorated bridge elements. The existing timber deck, handrails and kerbs had all reached the end of their serviceable life, and steel plates previously welded and bolted into position were removed safely by unbolting and grinding off the welds. These plates were transported undamaged to Swarf Quarry and neatly stacked in a designated area agreed with the engineer.

Prior to construction, the team established a compound and site set-up on the hardstanding to the east side of the bridge, requiring all materials to be delivered in advance of the works. Full bridge closure arrangements were communicated internally within FLS, with Heras fencing and advance signage installed to ensure safe access and clear public information.

Throughout the works, MAM Contracting provided full civil engineering services, protection of the adjacent watercourse, and careful management of all traffic types, including vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and horses. Environmental responsibility remained central to the project, with all removed timber and fixings disposed of at a licensed waste or recycling facility. Waste transfer certificates were provided to FLS in line with project requirements.

The completion of the Newcastleton bridge re-decking project highlights MAM Contracting’s ability to deliver high-quality infrastructure works efficiently, safely and under challenging conditions. The project stands as a testament to the skill, resilience and dedication of the team involved.
